The Hopeful
Kate Dickerson
My friend is gone,
the Jewish one,
whose house was next to ours.
We played together, in these fields,
before Hitler came to power.
No longer does his dog yap,
No longer do we play.
The night his synagogue went up in flames,
His family ran away.
"We fear," his father said to mine,"that next it will be
us.
You see their will, so we must leave. Come with us, you must."
One last look was our goodbye,
no presents were exchanged.
I'm faithful in my courage that all will be OK.
So I keep playing, while others have their rights taken away.
Still, here I am, waiting for my friend to come back again someday.

Choices
Emily James
I don't really have a choice
There's only one thing I can do
You say that I can choose
Then you tell me what to do
So I do what you say
And in the end I fail
Because I took your advice
Now we're both upset at me
You say I should have done better
I say I did what you said
And I tried my very best
But now I feel like a failure
I didn't accomplish my goal
I let us both down
You say it's not your fault
That I shouldn't have listened to you
So if you didn't want me to listen
Then why did you tell me at all
Now we're mad at each other
And it's all because I made a choice
To listen to you.

And The Curtain Falls
by Carrie Ann Culbertson
It starts out with excitement
Then turns extremely lame,
You're rehearsing and rehearsing,
Everything's the same.
You've said the same lines two million times,
But still you screw them up.
You've done the same thing every day,
And it makes you want to throw up.
If you have to say that stupid line,
One more single day,
You're sure that in no time,
You will surely hate this play.
Rehearsing and rehearsing,
For hours on end.
The holes that stream across the script,
Seems like they'll never mend.
Rehearsing and rehearsing,
The play is in one week.
You know the blocking and the lines,
But perfection is what you seek.
The play is in one hour,
The rehearsing is all done.
The curtain slowly opens,
Now it's time to have some fun.
As the crowd goes wild,
And the curtains close again,
It seems as though you've worked and worked,
Only for this night to end.
Now that it's over,
You want the moment back,
But the play ends abruptly,
With the clapping's final crack.

Choose Wisely
by Morgan McWhite
Nothing's left,
An empty slate,
Choose the road you wish to take.
One path brings treasure beyond belief,
Another brings pain unto your feet.
Long and winding, eternally growing,
With no end to your knowing.
The third, as plain as the eye can see
Hold onto a mystery
No traveler has returned to tell the tale-
Best to leave that one be.
Yet another route remains in view
Now it's up to you to choose
Thoughts wander about what's down the path,
Memories linking to the past.
Each different and inviting,
But be sure to choose wisely.
You can't come back, so pick up the pace
For footsteps in life can't be erased.
Time's running out, but pick carefully
Who knows what might be lurking in the trees
Lingering, waiting, watching for one wrong step
For a silent secret to be kept
Twists and unexpected tricks won't wait
Choose the road you wish to take.
